Fate of Intraco in Warsaw yet to be decided
Plans to demolish Intraco, one of Warsaw’s most recognizable 1970s office towers, have been put on hold after the regional heritage conservator launched a formal procedure to list the building as a protected monument. This decision temporarily blocks demolition, even though the investor already holds a valid permit. The review process is expected to last around two months, during which no construction or demolition work can take place. The move was prompted by pressure from heritage activists and local residents, who argue that Intraco has significant historical value. The owner, Polski Holding Nieruchomości, maintains that the building no longer meets heritage criteria and that its modernization potential has been exhausted.
The final ruling will determine whether Intraco is preserved or replaced with a new, energy-efficient office tower, setting an important precedent for how Warsaw treats postwar modernist architecture.
