Fuel Congress 2026: 30 refineries close in Europe, EU looking to Poland
At the Fuel Congress 2026 in Warsaw, policymakers said the war in the Persian Gulf has exposed a key weakness of the European Union: economic competitiveness.
Energy Minister Miłosz Motyka stressed that secure fuel supplies are essential for both economic strength and climate policy. He noted a shift in EU thinking toward nuclear energy, more stable energy prices, and reduced regulatory pressure.
Motyka also highlighted that over 30 refineries have closed in Europe in the past 15 years, increasing vulnerability. He linked fuel security with military logistics, pointing to NATO pipeline networks as critical infrastructure and calling for their expansion into Poland.
Officials emphasized that Poland’s diversification away from Russian energy is now seen as a model, especially as energy security becomes central to both economic and geopolitical stability.
