Grupa Azoty and fertilizer production becoming strategically important
Grupa Azoty is in weak financial condition, burdened by heavy debt, yet is becoming strategically important for both Poland and the European Union. Recent geopolitical tensions, including conflict in the Persian Gulf, exposed the risks of relying on imported fertilizers and raw materials.
Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz halted fertilizer exports from the region, highlighting the need for local production. At the same time, Europe faces high energy costs and growing dependence on Russian fertilizers, which raises food security risks.
Despite challenges, companies like Grupa Azoty are gaining importance as key suppliers. The situation may push the EU to revise its policies, including emissions rules and financing for gas-based industries, to better support strategic sectors such as chemicals and fertilizers.
