GUS: households responsible for 20% of national energy consumption in ‘24
Households accounted for more than 20% of Poland’s total energy consumption in 2024, according to Statistics Poland (GUS). Over 62% of household energy use was devoted to space heating, while water heating represented 18%. Electricity consumption for lighting and household appliances accounted for about 10%, with cooking responsible for a similar share. Compared with 2002, household electricity use has risen by nearly 24%, reflecting changes in lifestyles and equipment. Solid fuels — mainly hard coal and firewood — remain the dominant energy sources in homes, setting Poland apart from most EU countries.
Almost half of dwellings use district heating, primarily in large cities, and 53% rely on natural gas. The role of renewable energy is growing rapidly: the share of heat pumps has more than tripled since 2021, reaching 2.4% in 2024.
