LOT and Boeing at odds over 737 Max and safety issues
Polish airline LOT Polish Airlines is seeking compensation from Boeing, accusing the manufacturer of hiding safety problems related to the 737 Max aircraft during sales negotiations in 2016. LOT claims Boeing concealed flaws in the MCAS flight-control system, which later contributed to two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019 that killed 346 people. According to LOT, Boeing downplayed the risks to avoid costly pilot retraining and remain competitive against Airbus.
LOT leased 15 aircraft before regulators worldwide grounded the 737 Max fleet in 2019. The airline sued Boeing in 2021 for financial losses linked to the grounding. During hearings in a Seattle court, Boeing rejected the allegations, arguing that LOT still operates the aircraft today, which undermines claims of fraud. Boeing has already paid billions of dollars in settlements to victims’ families and airlines affected by the crisis.
