Poland Faces a Concerning Decline in Birth Rates

In 2023, only 272,000 children were born, the lowest number since World War II, with further drops expected in 2024. Demographers highlight the urgent need to address reproductive health, which has been overlooked in discussions about population growth and family policies. Factors like the rising average age of first-time mothers and socio-economic concerns, including fear of job loss, are contributing to the low fertility rate.

"We must put reproductive health at the center of the debate. It's essential for understanding and addressing the reasons behind low fertility rates," Prof. Dr. Hab. Elżbieta Gołata, Chair of the Committee of Demographic Sciences at the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN), stressed.
