Poland Hits Earth Overshoot Day on May 3

Poland’s Earth Overshoot Day in 2025 fell on May 3, meaning the country has already used up its annual supply of renewable natural resources. From this date onward, Poles are living on ecological credit, consuming more than nature can restore in a year.
The global average falls in August, showing how unsustainable Poland’s economy and lifestyle are. If the world lived like Poles, we’d need more than two Earths to meet demand.
According to Ilona Jędrasik from the Institute of Environmental Protection, the biggest pressures come from households, transport, and energy, still mostly powered by fossil fuels.
Experts warn that this overuse threatens biodiversity, air and water quality, and long-term food security. But it also offers a wake-up call: through greener policies, lifestyle changes, and better education, Poland can still shift course toward a more sustainable future.
