Poland has become the leading emitter of methane in Europe primarily due to its coal mining activities. Despite not being the largest coal producer in the EU, Polish mines—both operational and closed—emit the highest levels of this potent greenhouse gas. Methane's impact on climate change is significantly greater than that of CO2. Data from the Global Energy Monitor highlights that Polish coal mines are responsible for two-thirds of the EU's methane emissions from coal mining. The problem is further exacerbated by emissions from closed mines, which continue to release methane long after operations stop. Addressing these emissions is crucial to achieving climate goals.
