Poland to vote against EU’s new climate goal for 2040
Poland will vote against the EU’s proposed 2040 climate target, Climate and Environment Minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska announced. The plan calls for cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 90% compared to 1990 levels. Although the final text includes several amendments favorable to Poland—such as exempting the defense industry and allowing policy reviews in 2030 and 2035—Hennig-Kloska argued the target is still too ambitious for countries with heavier industrial profiles. She said Poland, along with France and Italy, is pushing for the goal to function more as a recommendation than a strict obligation.
The final outcome of the vote remains uncertain, as EU members continue negotiating compromises to secure enough support for adoption.
