Poland has offered to help Slovakia eliminate its dependence on Russian gas by supplying LNG via terminals on the Baltic Sea. Poland’s gas transmission system operator, Gaz-System, says the existing Poland–Slovakia interconnector, commissioned in 2022, can deliver up to 4.7 billion cubic meters of gas annually and is currently underutilized. Talks between Polish and Slovak officials have focused on better use of this infrastructure and potential LNG volumes, including from the planned FSRU terminal in Gdańsk. The proposal would allow Slovakia to gradually and safely diversify supplies ahead of the EU-wide ban on Russian gas imports from 2028.

While cost competitiveness remains an issue compared with routes via Germany or Austria, Polish authorities argue that supply security and regional energy independence make the Baltic “gas highway” an attractive alternative.
