Polish economy losing to the heat
Poland is experiencing one of the most intense heat waves in its recorded history, with temperatures recently exceeding 40°C in some areas. The heat is not only a health and comfort issue, but also an economic one. High temperatures reduce concentration, physical capacity, productivity and attendance, especially in workplaces without air conditioning and in outdoor sectors such as construction and agriculture. Research covering 2.7 mln firms in 23 developed countries shows that more hot days and heat waves directly lower labor productivity, with losses rising sharply above 40°C. Small firms and service sectors are hit hardest.
In 2015, Warsaw’s metropolitan area lost an estimated PLN 110 mln per day during a record heat wave.
