As Poland gears up for the second round of the presidential election, that would witness incumbent Andrzej Duda, a loyal ally of the country’s governing right-wing nationalist and populist Law and Justice (PiS) party face off liberal Rafał Trzaskowski, mayor of Warsaw, the nation watched two separate so-called “debates” hosted by different Polish-language news channels. Critics stated that both “debates” were “staged” in a similar way to an election rally.
According to a Wirtualne Media report, over 3 million viewers watched Duda “debate” on TVP, a state-owned public broadcaster that has been accused of acting as government’s propaganda mouthpiece, while over 2 million people tuned in to private TV station TVN24 to see Trzaskowski “debate.”
The latest opinion polls show that both the candidates are neck and neck in the runoff election scheduled to take place on July 12.
