A motion to lift parliamentary immunity for PiS MP Mateusz Morawiecki, former prime minister, has been submitted to Sejm Speaker Szymon Hołownia. The National Prosecutor's Office accuses Morawiecki of exceeding his powers during preparations for the May 2020 postal presidential elections, citing violations of the Electoral Code and misuse of the COVID-19 Special Solutions Act.
Prosecutors allege Morawiecki issued orders to the Polish Post and National Security Printing Works to organize and print election materials without proper legal authority. They claim these actions resulted in financial losses exceeding PLN 56.4 million for the State Treasury. Despite knowing the election would not occur, Morawiecki allegedly failed to suspend his directives.
The former prime minister could face up to three years in prison if convicted. Sejm approval is required to lift his immunity for criminal prosecution.
