PSE strategy: switch Poland to RES and avoid blackouts
Poland’s power grid operator, Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE), has presented its 2025–2040 strategy, warning that a nationwide blackout could cause economic losses of around PLN 40 billion per day. As Poland shifts from coal to weather-dependent renewable energy sources, managing the system becomes more complex. PSE estimates that renewables will generate about 60% of electricity within a decade, requiring major investments to maintain grid stability.
By 2034, the operator plans to integrate over 80 GW of new renewable capacity, energy storage, and dispatchable power, including nuclear energy. The strategy also emphasizes cybersecurity, blackout prevention, and large-scale grid expansion, with more than PLN 75 billion allocated to new and modernized infrastructure.
