Sales of Tokarczuk’s books soar after Nobel Prize win
The Nobel Prize for Literature for Olga Tokarczuk, which was announced on October 10, has caused a real explosion of interest in her books. By October this year, Tokarczuk had sold one million books and the number has doubled since her getting the award, according to Rzeczpospolita daily.
“The attention is enormous, just now the last prints in this year are coming to bookstores,” said Marcin Baniak from Wydawnictwo Literackie. He added that in 2020 great interest in the works of the Nobel Prize laureate is expected, especially in view of a new book, which the author has already announced.
The newspaper’s interviewees point out that the pre-Christmas period is good for book sales as books are a very popular Christmas present. According to an IBRiS survey conducted for Bank Millenium, 34% of Poles plan to buy such a Christmas present this year.
Rzeczpospolita notes that the situation in the book market is still far from optimistic, but it seems to be stabilizing. According to Bisnode Polska’s data, 119 bookstores were closed in Poland last year, while in previous years the figure stood at 400-500 annually. At the end of the first half of 2019, the number of bookstores in the country was estimated at over 3,700.
