Tusk Pushes for Economic 'Repolonization'

Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced a sweeping shift in Poland’s economic policy, calling for a “repolonization” of the economy that prioritizes national interests over foreign partnerships. Speaking at the EFNI Spring 2025 congress, Tusk declared the “end of naive globalization,” urging state-owned firms to favor Polish contractors and serve public interests first—even at the cost of profits.
Citing energy security and the construction of Poland’s first nuclear power plant, he insisted that state-owned firms invest heavily in domestic supply chains. “PLN 53 billion must go to Polish companies,” Tusk said of the nuclear project. He also cited Rafako, a former boiler manufacturer in Racibórz, as a potential site for arms production under EU defense funding.
The announcement triggered an immediate market reaction, with PGE shares dropping over 9% following the speech. Yet Tusk remained firm, calling the approach an “economic dictatorship” if necessary. “Poland’s interests must be primary for every official and every manager of a state-owned company,” he said.
The prime minister also pledged that Poland would earn a share in Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction efforts, stating, “We will be in solidarity, and we will make money on it.”
