A dispute over historic tenements at Józefa 9 and 11 and Bożego Ciała 24 in Kraków’s Kazimierz district has divided residents and investors. The buildings, currently home to tenants and local businesses including the iconic Eszeweria café, are set to be converted into a five star hotel with conference facilities. Residents and entrepreneurs fear evictions, loss of housing, and further tourist driven gentrification. A petition opposing the project has gathered over 28,000 signatures. The investor, De Silva Haus, argues the plan complies with the 2017 local zoning plan and warns it may seek compensation if the city changes regulations.

The mayor announced a review of the plan, but no formal steps have yet been taken.
