Eurostat: Poland has second highest deficit in EU

In 2024, the eurozone and EU saw slight improvements in public finance indicators. The average budget deficit-to-GDP ratio decreased to 3.1% in the eurozone and 3.2% in the EU, while public debt slightly increased to 87.4% and 81.0% respectively. Poland, however, recorded the second-highest budget deficit in the EU at -6.6% of GDP, following Romania (-9.3%).
Poland was one of twelve countries exceeding the 3% deficit threshold, triggering the EU's excessive deficit procedure. Despite this, Poland’s public debt remained below the EU's critical level, standing at 55.3% of GDP. The lowest debt levels were seen in Estonia and Bulgaria, while the highest were in Greece, Italy, and France.
