Insurers under the UOKiK magnifying glass
Poland’s competition authority UOKiK found that insurers generally handled claims efficiently after the 2024 floods, which affected 230,000 people and forced nearly 5,000 to leave their homes. The regulator found no widespread problem with rejected payouts: refusal rates ranged from 1% to 4%, while complaints were filed in only 3.5% of cases. Most negative decisions resulted from exclusions in policy terms, waiting periods or expired policies.
However, UOKiK warned that many customers do not fully understand what their insurance covers. Policies may exclude home equipment, solar panels, EV chargers, heat pumps or built-in fixtures unless specifically included. The regulator urged insurers to better assess customer needs and advised consumers not to choose policies based only on price, but to check coverage limits, deductibles, exclusions and whether insured values reflect today’s repair and rebuilding costs.
