President signs law to reduce fuel prices
Karol Nawrocki has signed new laws aimed at lowering fuel prices in Poland. The measures include a maximum price mechanism at gas stations, as well as planned cuts to excise duty and VAT, which will drop from 23 percent to 8 percent. According to Donald Tusk, these changes could reduce fuel prices by about 1.2 PLN per liter.
The reforms are intended to take effect quickly, before the Easter travel peak. The government may also introduce a windfall tax if fuel companies generate excessive profits. Officials describe the current fuel market situation as the worst crisis in 50 years, driven by global supply shortages.
The estimated budget cost is about PLN 0.7 bln monthly for excise cuts and PLN 0.9 bln for VAT reductions.
