The European Union is intensifying its efforts to combat disinformation, recognizing it as a growing threat to democracy and public trust. Through initiatives like the strengthened Code of Practice on Disinformation, the EU aims to hold tech platforms accountable for addressing false information spreading online. Signatories, including major companies like Google, Meta, and TikTok, must increase transparency, label AI-generated content, and prioritize factual news.
In addition to these measures, the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) enforces stricter rules for online platforms, ensuring they mitigate risks posed by fake news. The European Commission has also established the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO), fostering collaboration between fact-checkers, academics, and policymakers to analyze and address disinformation trends.
