Project to reduce electricity prices by 33% hits energy sector on WSE
President Karol Nawrocki has submitted a bill to the Sejm aimed at lowering household electricity bills by 33%. The proposal includes eliminating several surcharges (such as OZE, capacity, cogeneration and transition fees), reducing distribution costs by lowering the WACC rate to about 7%, limiting certificate-related expenses, and restoring a 5% VAT on electricity for households. Nawrocki argues the plan offers a permanent, systemic reduction rather than a temporary subsidy. If passed, savings could appear before year-end.
However, the announcement immediately impacted the stock market: shares of major energy companies PGE, Tauron and Enea dropped as investors anticipate pressure on their profitability. Analysts note the proposal signals increased regulatory risk for the sector.
