Paying taxes in Poland may prove profitable for Ukrainian workers

The number of refugees from Ukraine who have found employment in Poland based on simplified procedures is slowly approaching 0.5 million. However, there are still concerns among both Polish employers and Ukrainian employees regarding, among other things, the issue of legalization of residence, as well as many myths about tax residency and taxation in Poland and Ukraine. One of them is that taxes in Poland are high and that it is not worth being a Polish tax resident. However, it turns out that in some situations Ukrainian tax residency in Poland can pay off.
"As a rule, any person who works in Poland should pay taxes here. However, there is an exception to this rule. Namely, a person who is a Ukrainian tax resident, employed under a Ukrainian labor contract, does not pay taxes in Poland until his stay in Poland exceeds 183 days. Only after exceeding these 183 days of stay in Poland does such a person pay tax," Joanna Narkiewicz-Tarlowska, tax consultant and director of Vialto Partners, explained.
