EEC 2025: fight for raw materials creating a global dispute

Rare earth metals, essential for technologies like lasers, electronics, and aerospace, are largely controlled by China, which supplies over 61% of global demand and holds two-thirds of global reserves. Rising geopolitical tensions raise fears in Europe that trade restrictions could limit access to these critical resources.
This issue will be discussed at the 17th European Economic Congress (April 23–25, 2025) in Katowice during the “Critical Raw Materials” session. Experts, politicians, and business leaders will explore Europe’s options for securing these materials, including potential domestic sources. U.S. geopolitical moves involving Ukraine and Greenland also highlight global competition for control over rare earth resources, with Greenland alone holding an estimated 38.4 million tons.
