Energy prices falling in Europe, except for Poland

In May 2025, the European electricity market saw a clear decline in average day-ahead (SPOT) prices, with an average of €66.75/MWh—down 8.83% from April. This was driven by increased renewable energy output. However, Poland was an exception, recording a price rise to €94.29/MWh, 41% above the EU average.
Experts attribute this to a sudden 1 GW spike in demand despite lower coal prices and strong renewable generation. On the futures market, 2026 base contracts rose 6.92% across Europe, influenced by rising CO₂ emission allowance prices. In Poland, the increase was minimal at 0.64%. CO₂ and gas prices also rose, while coal contracts declined. Energy Solution, a consulting firm, provided the analysis.
