The European Commission has no plans to impose a temporary ban on platforms like TikTok or X in the European Union, said Thomas Regnier, the Commission's spokesperson for digital affairs. Speaking Thursday in Brussels, Regnier clarified that while the Digital Services Act (DSA) allows for such measures in exceptional cases, such as threats to user safety, the Commission does not foresee going to that extent.
Instead, the EU prioritizes compliance with regulations through alternatives like financial penalties, which can reach 6% of a company’s annual global turnover. The Commission continues to monitor platforms for adherence to rules on digital markets (DMA) and digital services, including content moderation and algorithm transparency.
Currently, TikTok and X face multiple investigations under the DSA, with cases against X involving illegal content and misinformation. TikTok is also under scrutiny for alleged interference in Romania's presidential elections.
