Historic power demand in Poland recorded on January 9

On the morning of January 9, 2024, Poland set a new national record for power demand, reaching around 28,358 MW at approximately 9:00 AM. This surpassed the previous record of 27,700 MW. The extreme cold weather, with temperatures dropping below -20 degrees Celsius in some regions, contributed to the high energy demand. The majority of power generation (23,090 MW out of 27,344 MW) came from thermal power plants using coal, lignite, and natural gas. Wind farms contributed 1,728 MW, while solar photovoltaic plants supplied 1,768 MW.
Despite the increase in renewable energy sources, coal remained the dominant contributor during this high-demand period.
