PIE: global demand for gas turbines for power plant will exceed capabilities
Global demand for gas turbines is outpacing production capacity, according to the Polish Economic Institute (PIE). The industry can currently manufacture about 60 GW of gas turbines annually, but demand is expected to reach 80 GW in 2025—a 40% y/y increase—and peak at 102 GW in 2028 before dropping to 70 GW by 2030. Projects worth over $400 billion may face delays or cancellations due to limited supply. The market is dominated by GE Vernova (25%), Siemens Energy (24%), and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (22%). Rising electricity demand (+2.2% y/y in 2024), partly driven by energy-hungry AI data centers, is fueling this growth.
Asia accounts for 58% of planned capacity, while Europe’s share is 11%. In Poland, up to 4.4 GW of new gas capacity could be built by 2029.
