Poland second to Romania in terms of size of public finance deficit
Poland remains the second highest in the EU for public finance deficit, likely behind Romania. In 2025, Poland’s deficit reached 7.2 percent of GDP according to Statistics Poland data. The increase was driven by rising spending on defense, social programs, and debt servicing, despite solid economic growth. Public debt is nearing constitutional limits and may exceed them within a decade. Romania’s deficit is still higher, while countries like Portugal and Spain improved their fiscal positions.
Germany has not yet reflected promised spending increases in its deficit data. Overall, Poland is among EU leaders in expanding deficits, unlike many other member states.
