Russia’s Hybrid Tactics Raise Alarm in EU

Russian hybrid operations – cyberattacks, disinformation, and sabotage – are intensifying, raising concerns for NATO’s eastern flank. The latest incident saw 19 Russian drones violate Polish airspace overnight from Ukraine and Belarus, before being neutralized.
In response, Polish MEPs called not only for declarations of solidarity but also for concrete measures, including stronger air defense, a greater allied presence, and tougher sanctions. A key tool is the EU’s SAFE programme, which allocates €150 billion to strengthen defense industries, including €43.7 billion for Poland to boost ammunition, armored vehicles, and air defense capacity.
“The Kremlin wants to test NATO’s determination and the EU’s unity. Our answer must be decisive: more investment in security, faster deliveries of equipment, and resilience against disinformation,” Krzysztof Hetman, Member of the European Parliament from the Polish People’s Party (PSL), said.
With Russia and Belarus preparing the Zapad-2025 drills involving over 40,000 troops, Poland has temporarily closed its border with Belarus, warning of provocations aimed at undermining regional stability.
