Ukrainian refugees in Poland are increasingly gaining access to the Polish healthcare system and are becoming more familiar with navigating it. Most visit doctors for acute illnesses, nearly one in five use dental services, and vaccination rates among children are rising. However, challenges remain, such as long waiting times for specialists, high consultation and treatment costs, and expensive medications. These issues are similar to those faced by Polish citizens. Dr. Nino Berdzuli from the WHO highlights the disparities in healthcare access between temporarily housed refugees and those with permanent residences.
"One of the challenges Ukrainian refugees face is accessing specialized medical care and the long waiting times for specialist visits. Among refugees staying in temporary accommodations, high out-of-pocket expenses for dental care and medications are particularly noticeable. We see a kind of inequality between temporarily housed Ukrainian refugees and those with permanent residences," Dr. Nino Berdzuli said.
