Carrefour eyes Polish exit

Carrefour is moving closer to withdrawing from Poland, with reports from French outlet La Lettre indicating the retailer has opened a virtual data room for potential buyers. JP Morgan is advising on the process.
Despite global growth—sales rose 9.9% in 2024 to €94.6 billion—Carrefour’s Polish arm has consistently underperformed. Last year, revenue in Poland fell 3% to €2.4 billion, while store numbers dropped below 800 for the first time in years, down nearly 7% to 783 locations. These include 531 convenience stores, 96 hypermarkets, 149 supermarkets, and seven Supeco discounters, alongside 40 shopping centers and a similar number of gas stations.
In early 2025, revenue in Poland rose just 0.6%, with like-for-like sales again negative. Biedronka’s parent, Jeronimo Martins, is among potential buyers, though any large-scale takeover could face antitrust hurdles. Carrefour recently announced the sale of its Italian operations.
