On Thursday, the Katowice branch of the Industrial Development Agency, which monitors the coal market and the situation in the domestic mining sector, published data on coal output and sales in the fifth month of 2021. Both output and sales were significantly higher in May than a year ago, when Poland's monthly coal production and sales hit historic lows due to a pandemic.
Last May, mines mined just under 3.2 million tons of coal and sold nearly 3.5 million tons. This year in May, production was more than 1.2 million tons higher than last year, and monthly sales were up year-on-year by more than 1 million tons.
The stock of coal on the dumps at the end of May this year was significantly lower compared to May 2020, when more than 7.4 million tonnes of unsold raw material was on the dumps. Currently, the stock on the dumps is lower by ca. 2 million tonnes - at the end of May this year it amounted to 5.4 million tonnes.

In the whole of 2020, Polish mines extracted about 7.2 million tons of hard coal less than a year earlier, and sales of this raw material were lower year-on-year by about 5.4 million tons.
