South Korea is experiencing a significant political crisis, its most severe since democratization in the 1980s. In December 2024, the country had three acting heads of state. The turmoil began when President Jun Suk-jeol declared martial law, accusing the opposition of North Korea ties. Parliament overturned the martial law and initiated impeachment proceedings. Subsequent leadership changes saw the finance minister assume presidential duties.
Despite the instability, experts believe existing Polish-South Korean defense contracts, including tanks, howitzers, rocket launchers, and aircraft, remain unaffected. However, ongoing negotiations for future deals face delays due to South Korea's political and legal discord. While the crisis may not directly impact military exports, its complex nature could slow discussions involving co-production and servicing agreements.
